  3. Hello Melissa - not a dumb question at all (Is there such a thing as a dumb question? I hope and believe not!)... I'm painting with oils; Senelier fast-drying oils with Liquin medium - and using a combination of rags, small printmaking-type rollers and various brushes... I marked out areas of the composition and then masked the edges of the paper with low-tack tape. This is how I end up with the crisp, clean edges... This pic shows a detail of a bigger paintings. I am thinking of inscribing text into the white bits so that it'll end up having a newspaper/columnar feel, I think... Not sure yet. Things tend to take shape as I go along! Thanks for coming to say hello, Melissa.

  4. It is ironic, T. Very. I must agree. Using oils makes sense in some ways, and absolutely no sense in others. Your water-based oils sound like a fine alternative. We do need to pay attention to the materials we use these days... especially when we're addressing issues of environmental concern. It's one of the things I appreciate about pastels; pure, natural, earth-made pigments. I suspect we have become too accustomed to too many things; the re-wiring has to start from the base up, doesn't it? Thanks for raising this question. It's an important one. L, C
