Nothing but

A candle is made to become entirely flame.
In that annihilating moment
it has no shadow.

It is nothing but a tongue of light
describing a refuge.

Look at this
just-finishing candle stub
as someone who is finally safe
from virtue and vice,

the pride and the shame
we claim from those.

  1. Well, I have to say that image looks more like an emergent mandala to me Claire! But hey, take no notice of me - viewing everything from out of a dalek eye does that to you y'know ... ;)

  2. Oh, but it IS a mandala, obd - or a candala, perhaps. Well spotted! My eyes are always on the lookout for them. I will be posting images of my circular glass spirit vials some time soon, each one a beautiful transparent mandala. Good wishes to you and your daleks, C.

PS. I sent Penelope a link to your post on intertidal zones. Have you visited her blog yet? If not, here's the link - http://www.penelopetodd.co.nz/

  3. This is continuing from my response to your comment on OBD105 :) ...

Yes, I had a quick look at Penelope's blog yesterday, I will drop by for a proper browse later today - Thank Q! for the link, and for mentioning OBD too (although I see you posted one million daleks, or OMD ... er, that would be the band Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark then, creators of some wonderful choons :)

I wonder would you mind if I used the candala image for the forthcoming Twilight Zone Pt 3, as it would tie in rather nicely with the theme of that post ...

    All The Best!

  4. Some candles puddle and make candalas. Others 'become entirely flame.' Who chooses?

  5. Hi Pen - candle and candle-lighter conspire?

  6. Oh, oops, obd - my humble apologies for the 'm'/'b' error. This will not happen again!

I've just posted a comment on your site, but will repeat it here because the themes you're currently writing about are ones I'm preoccupied with, too. Plus, there's the candala question! What I said there went something like this -

I'm interested in the difference between enmeshment and connection - one is healthy, the other not. It doesn't take much to distinguish which state of being goes with which descriptor. If daleks had hair, I imagine they'd prefer a handsome set of braids (beaded with steel wool and small ball-bearings, perhaps?) than an unintentional mish-mash of knots!

You are very welcome to use my candala image, obd, yes - and Thank Q!

  7. Yes, healthy / unhealthy interactions between individuals is something that is resolved within the i-Magi-Nation by daleks being "independent, self-reliant, unbeholden, and autonomous" entities (concepts mentioned in the Philosophy and Sociology blogs, if I remember correctly! :). That doesn't mean though that daleks don't engage in satisfying interpersonal relations, it's just that the governing principles are quite different from the set of 'defaults' manifest in the organic realm. The i-Magi-Nation will be posting at some length on all this in due course, once supporting 'brickwork' has been laid down :)

I will add you to the dalek Credits when your candala image is deployed Thank Q! I'll link the credit to your website, or if you'd prefer a link to your blog instead just let me know (though as your comments link through to your blog anyway, I thought a link to your website might be more useful for you!)

Oh, and I actually found some hairy daleks during a recent tour of the Internet! I was scouting for exhibits for the dalek A&C May Exhibition, but unfortunately, I passed the hairy ones by. But tell you what - if I see them again I'll pick 'em up for a dalek 'hairdessing' category for you! ;)
