Global moment

from the NY Times LENS page:

"Here it is: Earth, covered by stacks of thousands of virtual photographs corresponding in location to where they were taken by LENS readers at one moment in time: 15:00 U.T.C - Sunday 2 May 2010. . .
. . . Make no plans for the rest of the day!"

  1. Thanks for posting this, Claire. This event? happening? gathering? was/is awesome to experience. To travel around the world photographically and view the vastness of simultaneous activity, as well as noting the commonest things that bind us all -- family, work, play, nature. A profound treat. Reminds me of a famous US photo exhibition from the 1950s called "The Family of Man." One small, busy world. And good on you, Claire. Spin the globe to NZ and there you are!

  2. Tremendous!

    Dizzying.

"Too Early for Spring" came right up once I located New Zealand. I admire its frieze-like beauty and stillness.

  4. Hi Tim, Mim, Vanda

Globally inclusive projects such as this one engender so much goodwill and remind us of the things that connect us rather than those that divide us.

I remember being struck years ago by one of Sting's songs, 'Russia' in which he was writing of the absolute senselessness & devastation of war, perhaps stating the obvious with the line 'The Russians love their children, too...' but immediately returning each soldier's humanity to him. No more the faceless power, or the faceless opposition.

The more we can get involved in these large-scale community events, the better I reckon. We and our world need as much good will as we can possibly generate!

Love to you, fine friends -
    Claire
